The name Geroskipou derives for the words Ieros Kipos, meaning Holy Gardens, preserving in this manner the relaftionship which exists between the Goddess of Love and Beauty, Aphrodite, and the region. Aphrodite, was also worshiped as the Goddess of Vegetation and of the Flowers. That is the reason why she was also known with the names Aphrodite Anthea (Aphrodite of the Flowers) and Aphrodite I en Kipois (Aphrodite of the Gardens).

The power of Aphrodite, as the goddess of the earth, is mainly revealed through the sap which gives life to the offshoots of the plants, the overflow of the grass, the vegetation and the flowers. Aphrodite crowned with myrtle and roses, is supervising the rebirth of the new life, that appears in green gardens and shady groves, and which are dedicated to her.

According to tradition the Holly Gardens were linked directly to the devotional ceremonies in honour of Aphrodite.

At the beginning of every April a fabulous ceremony called “The Aphrodisia”, was organized in Palaipafos (today Kouklia) to honour the goddess. The day before the ceremony, all pilgrims gathered in a designated place in the Holy Gardens, waiting for Dawn to brake and the appearance of the Morning Star.

The signal for the great procession to start was given, soon after the Morning Star appeared on the sky. Escorted by the sounds of music and the rhythms of dancing the procession reached the next day Palaipafos where the festivities begun.
